Adaptation of copper community tolerance levels after biofilm transplantation in an urban river ArchiMer
Fechner, Lise C.; Versace, Francois; Gourlay-france, Catherine; Tusseau-vuillemin, Marie-helene.
The Water Framework Directive requires the development of biological tools which can act as early-warning indicators of a sudden increase (accidental pollution) or decrease (recovery due to prevention) of the chemical status of aquatic systems. River biofilms, which respond quickly to modifications of environmental parameters and also play a key part in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, are therefore good candidates to monitor an increase or a decrease of water pollution. In the present study, we investigated the biological response of biofilms transplanted either upstream (recovery) or downstream (deterioration of exposure levels) the urban area of Paris (France). Both modifications of Cu community tolerance levels and of global bacterial and...

Assessment of ammonia toxicity in contaminated sediments in the upper Scheldt (Belgium): the development and application of toxicity identification evaluation procedures OMA
Van Sprang, P.; Janssen, C.R.; Sabayasachi, M.; Benijts, F.; Persoone, G..
The toxicity of sediment pore waters from 4 sites in the Upper Scheldt war characterized using modified Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) procedures The samples from all locations exhibited acute toxicity to the freshwater crustacean Thamnocephalus platyurus. The IIE approach was conducted using an enlarged battery of fractionation tests. Toxicity was removed or reduced significantly by the cation exchange resins and the air-stripping test at pH 11. Additionally, increased toxicity war observed at higher pH while a reduced toxicity war found at a decreased pH. From these TIE studies, ammonia war identified as the dominant toxic agent.

Daily and seasonal estimates of the recruitment and biomass of glass eels runs (Anguilla anguilla) and exploitation rates in the Adour open estuary (Southwestern France) ArchiMer
Bru, Noelle; Prouzet, Patrick; Lejeune, Michel.
The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is drastically declining in all its distribution area and listed in the red list of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). A rebuilding plan was adopted at European level in 2007, Regulation R(CE) 100/2007, to restore eel abundance to the level observed during the seventies. Its implementation started on the 1(st) of January 2009. This species is heavily threatened by numerous activities including fishing, and its management can only be effective through a systemic approach minimizing the whole range of human-induced impacts on the resource and its habitat. In the framework of the European interregional programme INTERREG IIIB-Atlantic Area-the INDICANG project aimed at elaborating abundance...

Demonstration Restoration Measures in Tributaries of the Vindel River Catchment Ecology and Society
Holmqvist, Daniel; Vindel River Fishery Advisory Board; daniel.holmqvist@lycksele.se.
Some ecological restoration projects include elements of trial and error where new measures are repeatedly tried, evaluated, and modified until satisfactory results are achieved. Thereafter, the resulting methods may be applied on larger scales. A difficult step is judging whether developed “best-practice” methods have become reasonably ecologically functional or whether further experimentation “demonstration” methods can lead to yet better results. Here, we use a stream restoration project as a case study for evaluating methods and abiotic effects and outlining stakeholder support for demonstration restoration measures, rather than only using best-practice methods. Our work was located in the Vindel River system, a...

Dietary breadth and trophic position of introduced European catfish Silurus glanis in the Tarn River (Garonne River basin), southwest France ArchiMer
Syvaeranta, Jari; Cucherousset, Julien; Kopp, Dorothee; Crivelli, Alain; Cereghino, Regis; Santoul, Frederic.
Although being a widely introduced and successfully established species, the European catfish Silurus glanis L. (the world’s third largest freshwater fish) remains poorly studied in its introduced areas. Here we studied the trophic ecology of non-native European catfish in a large river system in south-western France using stomach content and stable isotope analyses (SIA). We used fin samples for SIA of catfish and hence tested the validity of using fin tissue as a proxy for muscle in SIA. The mean δ15N and δ13C values analysed from fin tissues did not differ from those analysed from muscle tissue and reflected strong and consistent relationships (r2 = 0.95 for carbon and r2 = 0.98 for nitrogen). The δ15N values varied almost 5‰ among the analysed catfish...

Going against the flow: Effects of river damming in Cuban fisheries OceanDocs
Baisre, J. A.; Arboleya, A..
Over the last decade eutrophication of freshwater artificial reservoirs in Cuba occurred in parallel to oligotrophication of estuarine and coastal waters. These two processes influenced both freshwater and marine fisheries. A dramatic shift in species composition in freshwater fisheries has occurred, from dominance by cichlids (tilapia) to dominance by cyprinids. The high fishery yield from some reservoirs, and shift in species composition, seems related to progressive eutrophication of reservoirs by nutrient subsidies from different anthropogenic activities; particular those related to the size of urban areas within their watersheds. On the other hand, marine landings of estuarine-dependent species declined more significantly than for other groups...

Ullah,Sana; Hussain,Zaqhim; Mahboob,Shahid; Al-Ghanim,Khalid.
ABSTRACT This study was conducted in the River Panjkora, Pakistan, in order to assess the level of heavy metals accumulated in the liver, kidneys, gills and muscle tissues of three highly consumed fish species by the local community, Garra gotyla, Cyprinus carpio and Cyprinion watsoni. The heavy metals including manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) were determined in the collected fish specimens through an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Level of heavy metals significantly varied depending upon tissues type and fish species. Cyprinus carpio accumulated highest concentration of heavy metals, followed by Garra gotyla while Cyprinion watsoni accumulated least concentration of heavy metals. All the...

Hydrological and biogeochemical dynamics of the minor and trace elements in the St. Lawrence River ArchiMer
Rondeau, B; Cossa, Daniel; Gagnon, P; Pham, T; Surette, C.
Surface water samples from the St. Lawrence River were collected in order to study the processes controlling minor and trace elements concentrations (Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni and Zn), and to construct mass balances allowing estimates of the relative importance of their natural and anthropogenic sources. The two major water inputs, the upper St. Lawrence River, which drains waters originating from the Lake Ontario, and the Ottawa River were collected fortnightly over 18 months. In addition, other tributaries were sampled during the spring floods. The output was monitored near Quebec City at the river mouth weekly between 1995 and 1999. Dissolved metal concentrations in the upper St. Lawrence River carbonated waters were lower than in the acidic waters of...

Introdução de espécies de peixes por escapes acidentais de tanques de cultivo em rios da Bacia do Rio Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Orsi,Mário L; Agostinho,Ângelo A.
Species composition and abundance of fishes that escaped from aquaculture facilities during catastrophic flooding in the Paranapanema and Tibagi rivers, in January, 1997 was estimated. In all , 1,292,000 adult individuais belonging to 11 species and 1 hybrid, were introduced into these rivers; only one species was native. The disaster is attributed to the illegal occupation of the river banks, and the non observance of standard measures designed to avoid escapement.

Iron isotope systematics in Arctic rivers ArchiMer
Escoube, Raphaelle; Rouxel, Olivier; Pokrovsky, Oleg S.; Schroth, Andrew; Holmes, Robert Max; Donard, Olivier F. X..
The input of iron to the Arctic Ocean plays a critical role in the productivity of aquatic ecosystems and is potentially impacted by climate change. We examine Fe isotope systematics of dissolved and colloidal Fe from several Arctic and sub-Arctic rivers in northern Eurasia and Alaska. We demonstrate that the Fe isotopic (δ56Fe) composition of large rivers, such as the Ob’ and Lena, has a restricted range of δ56Fe values ca.–0.11 ± 0.13‰, with minimal seasonal variability, in stark contrast to smaller organic-rich rivers with an overall δ56Fe range from–1.7 to + 1.6‰. The preferential enrichment with heavy Fe isotopes observed in low molecular weight colloidal fraction and during the high-flow period is consistent with the role of organic complexation of...

Les polychlorobiphenyles ( PCB ) en Baie de Seine ArchiMer
Abarnou, Alain.
PCB contamination and i ts relationship wi th suspended particulate matter (SPM) have been studied in water from the Seine estuary and the baie de Seine, in July 1985 and February 1986. PCB chromatograms are very similar and characterize a chronic contamination. PCB concentrations vary from 2 ng/l in the marine zone up to 210 ng/l in the estuary. SPM and PCB concentrations are weIl correlated. Highest PCB concentrations are measured in February due to higher SPM inputs mainly made of finer particles.

Manager perspectives on communication and public engagement in ecological restoration project success Ecology and Society
Druschke, Caroline Gottschalk; University of Rhode Island; cgd@uri.edu; Hychka, Kristen C.; U.S. EPA, Atlantic Ecology Division; khychka@gmail.com.
We look to a particular social-ecological system, the restoration community in Rhode Island, USA and the rivers, wetlands, marshes, and estuaries they work to protect, to draw connections between communication, community involvement, and ecological restoration project success. Offering real-world examples drawn from interviews with 27 local, state, federal, and nonprofit restoration managers, we synthesize the mechanisms that managers found effective to argue that the communication employed by resource managers in each phase of the restoration process, in prioritization, implementation, and monitoring, and for garnering broad-based support, shapes the quality of public engagement in natural resources management, which, in turn, can impact the stakeholder,...

Mercury in the Lot-Garonne River system (France): Sources, fluxes and anthropogenic component ArchiMer
Schafer, J; Blanc, Gerard; Audry, S; Cossa, Daniel; Bossy, C.
Dissolved and particulate Hg fluxes in the Lot-Garonne-Gironde fluvial-estuarine system were obtained from observation of daily discharge and suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations. In addition to the measurements of the total dissolved (< 0.45 gm) and particulate Hg (> 0.45 gm), called HgTD and HgTp respectively, the dissolved inorganic Hg species (HgRD) were determined monthly. Geochemical background values for HgTp in sediments and SPM were similar to crustal values and to typical concentrations in SPM of non-contaminated river systems, respectively. The Riou Mort watershed already known as the origin of important historical polymetallic (e.g., Cd, Zn) pollution was identified as an important Hg point source. In the downstream Lot...

Nutrient fluxes to the Bay of Biscay from Cantabrian rivers (Spain) ArchiMer
Prego, R; Vergara, J.
Nutrient fluxes to the Bay of Biscay from the Cantabrian basin have been quantified for the first time. Data between 1981 and 1995 of the main 16 Cantabrian rivers from the COCA monitoring programme have been used. Values of water flow and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate and silicate concentrations have been taken. Equations are proposed to quantify the fluvial nutrient contributions to the Cantabrian Sea. The annual average of continental outputs to the Bay of Biscay from the Cantabrian basin is 16.1 x 10(9) m(3) of freshwater, 1.0 x 10(9) mol of N in DIN, 0.062 x 10(9) mol of phosphate and 1.2 x 10(9) mol of silicate. In comparison with the French rivers, those of the Cantabrian have small fluxes and their outflow is very disperse, not...

Phytoplankton of two rivers in the eastern Amazon: characterization of biodiversity and new occurrences Acta Botanica
Cunha,Elane Domênica de Souza; Cunha,Alan Cavalcanti da; Silveira Jr,Arialdo Martins da; Faustino,Silvia Maria Mathes.
During the various hydrological periods in 2011, we studied the phytoplankton along an 87-km stretch of the Araguari and Falsino rivers, which are located in the eastern Brazilian Amazon, in the state of Amapá, Brazil, the most ecologically preserved state in the country. In the study area, the aquatic ecosystem is under pressure from human activities such as, mining, hydroelectric power generation and urbanization, which contrast with the surrounding areas that are designated for biodiversity conservation. The aim of this study was to characterize the composition, frequency and richness of algae species and also to identify spatial-temporal patterns of taxa distribution. During the study period, we identified 185 taxa (136 species in 49 genera). The...
